ISO 9001: Support And Why We Need It

This 101 is looking at Section 7.1 Support. Why is this important to my business? Well, no business can survive without support. You need people, infrastructure and a suitable environment in order to support your business. A suitable environment includes everything from temperature, light, air condition, cleanliness, health and safety.

"You also need to make sure your people are happy!"

Are they sat in comfortable positions? Do they have the right facilities and equipment to do the job without causing stress or hazards to their health? Are there systems in place to help with employees physical and mental well-being?

But how do I manage this? You need to determine if your current situation enables you to satisfy customers. If you have too few people or inappropriate environment it will be difficult to do so. At the same time, the cost benefit of hiring new people or renting a new place need to be risk assessed. After all, if you are having a good few months, but it is likely to go back to more reasonable levels after a while, then there is probably no need to expand.

If you carry out a formal risk and opportunities process, then your support situation needs to be considered during then. Alternatively, you can discuss this in your management reviews. Naturally, if a situation arises unexpectedly, then this needs to be addressed asap. Having a method to do so will enable you to act quickly with a higher level of certainty.
