In this series of helpful blog posts, commonly called a 101, I will be taking a look at the main sections of ISO 9001, what they are, why they are important to your business and a few tips on how to implement the standard ...

With ISO 9001, the outputs of the design and development process are key for the production or service provisions!

This 101 is looking further into Section 8.3.5 Design and Development Outputs. Why is this important to my business? Because design and development, just like any other process has outputs.

This helps makes sure everyone understands what the process is and what has been agreed. The outputs of the design and development process will be key for the production or service provisions.

How do I do this? The design and development outputs are guided by the standard with the following points:

  • Everyone who receives the outputs needs to be identified so they get them in the right format to use them

  • You need to understand what you need to monitor or measure and what the acceptance criteria is for your product or service

  • Make sure everyone knows how to repeatedly carry out the production or delivery of the service in a consistent manner

  • Give information to ensure that the product or service can be used or deliver safely e.g. heating instructions for food or PPE requirement for chemicals

The kind of documents that you might find useful as outputs are:

  • Drawings

  • Specs

  • Control, construction, marketing and other plans

  • Technical calculations

  • Assembly instructions

  • Service manuals

  • Graphic materials

There are a variety of ways you can manage this. Personally, I use Teamwork to help me plan any project, including design and development ones. You can upload all the output documents mentioned above to the files area for everyone to see and all documentation is version controlled. Any issues can be raised as tasks and tracked through the system. There are a lot of options to suit whatever process you decide on.

Many of the companies I have worked with have found it useful to have an independent person to work with them to help control their design and development processes.
