This 101 is looking into Section 9.2 Internal Audit. Why is this important to my business? Because good internal audits help you understand if your processes are working. When your processes are working this indicates your business is working.

Processes refer to everything from leadership and objectives, through to your day to day operations. If all your processes are working then your customers should be satisfied with your products and services.

Internal audits also look into compliance of your processes to legal requirements, regulations and standards such as ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001 and ISO27001!

How do I do this? First, you need to understand what criteria you are auditing against e.g. ISO 9001 Section 8. Then you need to know the scope of the audit, for example, the Milton Keynes Office or the UK Production Department. These audits need to be identified in an audit schedule. The audit schedule can be affected by the risks involved, the number of customer complaints or recent changes in the area.

When it comes to actually carrying out the audit, the auditor needs to be independent of the areas being audited. It is a great idea to make sure your auditor has had internal or lead auditor training to ensure they are competent. The auditor will then write up an audit report which records any non-conformances, opportunities for improvement and positive points for you to review and action.

How do I manage this? There are a variety of ways you can manage this. As a smaller company, it is often easier to bring in an independent consultant to carry out your internal audits. For larger companies, getting a few members of staff from different areas of the business trained to carry out internal audits means you can conduct independent and impartial audits yourselves.

If you would like an external consultant to come in and carry out independent and impartial audits feel free to contact us. We are also able to help you train your staff to become certified auditors with a bespoke course designed for your business.
