In this series of blog posts, I will be taking a look at the main sections of ISO 9001, what they are, why they are important to your business and a few tips on how to implement the standard ...

This 101 is looking at Section 7.1.6 - Organisational Knowledge. Why is this important to my business? Because every company builds up a wealth of knowledge. This could be everything from specific knowledge about your products or services, through to HR and IT information.

"How this knowledge is collected, shared and analysed often determines the success of the business!"

If you have key people who keep information close to their chest, then it is difficult to run the company without them should they depart. It also discourages the sharing of new thoughts, ideas and innovations which naturally harms the company as a whole. It also makes things harder work than necessary in general which is inefficient, to say the least.

How do I get, share and analyse organisational knowledge? Well, it does depend on your company. One of the clients I went to see kept the process map for the company on the wall for all to see.

Noticeboards are usually found in most offices to share important health and safety information and so forth. Intranets and other cloud-based systems can make sharing organisational knowledge very easy if well organised and maintained. If you are a project-based company, then having a 'lessons learnt' review can be great at capturing knowledge gained.

Having conversations with customers, suppliers and employees about their views can also reap great benefit and can be benchmarked against other similar companies. Once all this knowledge is gathered it can be reviewed to see if there are any trends or insights to be gleaned from it.

Many of the companies I have worked with have found it useful to have an independent person to work with them to help understand the requirements and how to implement them.
